Farmeco Community Carefarm is going back to a mixed farm enterprise with high environmental and animal welfare systems, the farm is building an eco building for educational access and to act a visitors’ centre. Workshops to get involved with are available all year round.

Farmeco Community Care Farm is part of a conglomerate of four farms that are working together to make farming more environmentally sustainable, better suited to the needs of  local food markets, more wildlife-friendly, more open to the local the community, less dependent on chemical pesticides and on fertiliser and less dependent on long-distance transport and thereby have a lower carbon footprint.

We see an essential part of this initiative is to educate the wider community and encourage involvement in food production to increase local consumption of produce.

To this end  Farmeco Community Care Farm has just started High Environmental Stewardship (HLS)on the farm. http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/farming/funding/es/hls/default.aspx

  • The farm wants to implement Community Supported Agriculture (an initiative supported by the Soil Association) and aims to encourage the wider community to become more involved in the food production process, from growing their own produce in allotment facilities, to guided walks around different aspects of the farm through to participating in the business of the farm.
  • The farm is currently building a classroom facility and some poly-tunnels on land adjacent to the classroom to enable young learners from schools and colleges in the area to access a range of learning and work experience activities.

Secondary Education

  • The facility will offer training to Diploma level and the opportunity to bring classes of learners onto a working farm to deliver units of the principal learning. Teaching staff will teach the curriculum and supervise the learners with input from farm staff as appropriate.
  • The farm is proposing to set up virtual communication with Diploma consortia to keep learners up to date with current farm activities.
  • The facility will be used as a base for learners engaged in work experience placements.
  • The facility will be made available to the wider community.
  • The classroom will be utilised for training and updating farm staff and for training them in working with young learners.
  • Farmeco Community Care Farm believes that employers have a responsibility to help educate the workforce of the future and also wishes to educate and involve the wider community in extensive reform within agriculture.
  • Environmental and Land Based Studies is a new Diploma and represents a whole new curriculum area for schools and F.E. colleges that was previously taught only to post 16 learners within specialist colleges. Facilities for such learning are scarce in schools and there are few opportunities to witness at close quarters arable and livestock farming activity.

We are pleased to be a host farm for Let Nature Feed Your Senses which is a flagship project under Natural England’s Access to Nature Programme. The project aims to encourage disabled and disengaged groups to develop a life long love of nature through food and farming. Let nature feed your senses is run by LEAF and the Sensory Trust, and involves organising sensory rich visits to farms and nature reserves across England.
