Care Farm

When my grandfather Stanley Clarke first came to Screveton in 1933 he started with 90 acre of land and ran a mixed arable and livestock farm, he milked a small Friesian herd and delivered milk around the local villages.  The local butcher and baker had similar rounds.  My grandmother picked blackberries and apples and sold them under her own name through Nottingham market. Such arrangements were common practice in Nottinghamshire.

  • The consumer knew, or knew of, the farm where his/her purchases originated.
  • The housewife cooked and provided meals from basic raw materials.

The supply chain was CONNECTED.

Today that scenario has been turned on its head. The majority of food is purchased by the consumer through huge supermarket chains. Most of it is labelled, at best, solely with the country of origin. Research shows that on average only 15-25 minutes is devoted to the preparation of a family’s main meal. Increasingly such meals comprise, partly or in total, of pre-prepared, ready to serve, often pre-cooked, ingredients.

The supply chain is DISCONNECTED.

I believe farming need to be RECONNECTED to its local communities both rural and urban?

S Clarke Farms has been the name for our farm for the last 50 years and we still currently trade with the same name, With a change in farm policy into education and health provision  we have decided to set up a division called Farmeco Community Carefarm.

The Farm is now being run by the third/fourth generation occupants , the farm is now 265 hectare (660 acre) farm enterprise.

The farm comprises around

  • 600 acres of this is in arable production
  • 60 acres put down to grass for sheep and cattle grazing
  • 20 acres woodland
  • 8 miles of footpaths and tracks
  • 150 Easycare sheep
  • A small heard of Saddleback pigs
  • In the process of building an eco education facility.
  • Conservation bread making program
  • Planting orchards and fruit growing areas.

Introduction to Farmeco UK Ltd

The cultivation and harvesting operations are handled by the contract farming company, Farmeco UK Ltd , of which farm owner, David Rose, is a co-founder and co-director.
The contract farming company was established as a collaborative farming venture by four neighbouring farms, one of which is S Clarke Farms (Farmeco community Care farm).

Collectively the four individual farms together comprise a total farmed area of around 3000 acres (1,214hecatares). The individual farm owners act as Farmeco shareholding directors and pay a fee for contracting services. These fees effectively cover the company’s fixed costs such as labour and machinery. Farmeco implements the farm operations on the ground, and also is now supplying variable costs including inputs such as seeds and agrochemicals carring out marketing outputs such as grain and oilseeds.
